What Is Shrinkage in Coily Hair?
You wash your hair, let it dry, and suddenly it looks half as long as it did when it was wet. Sound familiar? That’s shrinkage, and it’s one of the most misunderstood things about coily hair. Here’s what’s really happening and why you should celebrate it instead of fighting it.
What Shrinkage Actually Is
Shrinkage is when coily hair looks much shorter than it really is after it dries. This happens because the coils return to their tight, natural shape as they lose moisture. Coily hair, especially type 4, can look up to 75% shorter than when it’s stretched. So, hair that touches your shoulders when wet might rest just above your ears when dry.
Shrinkage Is a Sign of Healthy Hair
Here’s something that surprises many people: shrinkage is actually a good sign. It means your hair has strong elasticity, or the ability to stretch and bounce back without breaking. Elasticity is a key sign of healthy, well-moisturized hair.
Hair that’s been damaged by heat, chemicals, or dryness loses that snap-back quality. It might stretch but won’t return to its shape. So when your hair shrinks a lot, your coils are doing exactly what they should.
Working With Shrinkage Instead of Against It
Shrinkage isn’t a problem to fix. It’s just something to understand. Still, there are times you might want to show more of your length, and there are gentle ways to do that without causing damage:
· Stretch your hair while it dries. Techniques like banding, African threading, or twist-outs can help lengthen your hair as it dries, all without using heat.
· Try braids or twists. Styling your hair into twists or braids while it’s damp and letting it dry that way gently stretches your coil pattern.
· Blow dry on low heat with a diffuser. If you use heat, always apply a heat protectant and keep the temperature low.
Your hair isn’t any less beautiful when it’s natural than when it’s stretched. Both looks are yours. Learning to appreciate the volume and fullness that shrinkage gives you can be one of the most rewarding parts of your natural hair journey.
